Sunday, September 30th, 2007

France Presse.

(A Thousand Years of Good Prayers)

Break
02:15 PM - Friday, September 28, 2007 - by Tim
Fans of Prison Break will get a little extra out of today’s strip, I think. I watched the first season on DVD earlier this year, on a whim, and was surprised when I really enjoyed it. I was still skeptical that they would be able to keep it going in a second season, but when that came out on DVD a few weeks ago, I plowed through it fast enough to catch up in time for the start of the new season. And so far it’s looking like it will continue to be a pretty damned good show.

I played some 4 person Halo co-op with some people the other night… the 4-player part was great, but I just wasn’t really all that impressed otherwise. It almost seemed too crowded, and making the three other players alien-creatures was just too confusing. In the middle of a big fight, they looked just like everyone else. In my opinion a squad of Spartans would have been the way to go.

I think the most fun was just killing each other, though. I was particularly fond of driving a warthog off a cliff, and jumping out at the last second, while Brian, still in the gunner seat, careened over the edge along with the vehicle.

I’ve been playing Skate more than Halo 3, but I still jump on occasionally for some matches. At least for the next two weeks until The Orange Box comes out. Then Halo will probably get shelved in favor of TF2.

TF2

Yeah, I know I could pre-order TF2 and play in the beta right now… but that’s only if I wanted the PC version. TF2 I could play either way, but for Portal I want The Orange Box on my 360.

Besides, I’d like to give Skate and Halo 3 another couple of weeks before my attention wanders off to yet another game.

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Ride the machine
02:12 PM - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 - by Tim
So Halo 3 is finally out, and thank the almighty Robot Jesus. Hopefully now we can all shut up about it, and focus on a game that really deserves some anticipation. Like Mass Effect. Now there’s a game I could almost get excited enough over to go to some ridiculous midnight opening for… but still not.

Don’t get me wrong here, Halo 3 is a good game. All three Halo games are good. They’re solid titles with good graphics and good gameplay. I played some Halo 3, I enjoyed it. But it just seems like we’ve done this exact same dance twice before.

It has some new features, new weapons, new maps, all of which are really cool… but to me the game plays and feels exactly like the previous Halo. The graphics are okay, but they’re hardly the best the 360 has to offer. They’re obviously not ugly, the visuals are clean and attractive, with some cool effects. But coming off a weekend of straight Bioshock, a game that seemed to really push the lighting and textures and effects to a new level, it’s hard not to draw parallels, and Halo 3 comes up shorter.

I do love the new features that are there. The forge and theater options are really fun and great. The party/online system is one of the best I’ve seen so far, with regards to finding exactly the games you want to play, and avoiding the retards as best as possible. The new weapons are neat, the maps seem pretty cool, especially seeing the updated ones from Halo 2.

But that’s the point. They all seem more like… an update to Halo 2, than a whole new game. And that’s not to belittle the sheer amount of work that I know went into designing those systems. I can only imagine that the theater playbacks themselves were a herculean effort of coding and computer wizardry. And the result is a really cool feature.

But I just can’t get behind this “greatest game ever” stuff. Personally, I think a lot of the review scores were given in the reviewers heads before the game even arrived, and some of the score may be attributed more to the juggernaut franchise that Halo is, and less to the actual game itself.

That said, it is a good game. I do enjoy it. I’m hardly bashing Halo here, I enjoy playing it. I just think some people are going overboard with the hype. Though I’m laughing at the people who stood out at midnight because they just had to get their copy at 12:01 now, in a couple of months I’ll probably be the one salivating uncontrollably at the Pavlovian bell that is Mass Effect. I guess the hype hits us all for different things, for different reasons.

That said, I may be on playing Halo anytime between 9am-3pm EST (when the children are in school), so if you see me on, feel free to jump in. I usually leave my games open to my friends list. I pruned my friends list for inactives (anyone who hasn’t signed on in more than a day) last night, so I should have some spots open, if you want to send me a request. First come, first served.

Also, the demo for the new Crash Bandicoot game was pretty cool. I watched my girlfriend play it yesterday afternoon, and it looks really neat. I haven’t played a Crash game since… well since the very first one on the PS1. But I really liked the cartoony style for this one. May have to grab that when it comes out.

Server stuff, and Heroes talk (spoilers)
02:28 PM - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 - by Tim
Regarding the issues with the advertisements and our forums, there is a small technical issue with the server on which those two systems reside. The server monkeys are aware of it, and working to fix whatever has been exploding.

And how about Heroes, huh?! I’m most confused about what’s up with Nathan. It would make sense that he got burned up pretty badly while carrying Peter to explode in the sky. But why isn’t it showing? Why did he only see a flash of it in the mirror? Or was he healed? Argh!

And Peter… glad to see he isn’t dead, I didn’t expect he would be, but why did the Haitian wipe his memory? That’s my assumption because he’s wearing the Haitian’ necklace when the Irish find him. We know that the Haitian worked for Angela Petrelli, so she must have ordered it…

Actually I’m glad to see that nobody really died (Matt, Nathan, etc) though it would have given the show a sense of real mortality for the characters. Oh well. Good stuff.

So that’s how it is huh?

Here you will find a blog by the director of the season 2 opener, ‘Four Months Later”. If you scroll down to the 7th paragraph, you will see this little bit:

“Nathan, who was so in control and determined as a political candidate last year, has seemingly lost it all and has no goals. He drinks alone in a bar and is haunted by a disfigured version of himself. Who is this vision and what is the symbolism behind his horrible disfigurement?”

It is not Peter.

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Friday, September 28th, 2007

>

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Но Хаггис отказался от этого проекта в пользу фильма “In the Valley of Elah”, впервые показанного на Венецианском кинофестивале 2007 года.
